Winning races isn’t just about having the fastest horse—it’s about smart placement. In this post, I share some of my personal experiences from 20 years of training thoroughbreds in Australia, including the hard-earned lessons that helped me place horses where they had the best chance of winning. With a couple of examples, I’ll show you why careful form analysis and race selection matter more than chasing glory. Whether you're a seasoned trainer or just starting out, this guide will help you think differently about your strategy for placing thoroughbred racehorses.

Introduction
Training a thoroughbred racehorse to win isn’t just about speed or pedigree; it's also about strategy. After two decades of training racehorses in Australia, I’ve learned that placing horses according to their ability can make all the difference between running a nice race, and actually earning prizemoney.
Understanding Race Strategy
Many trainers get caught up in the allure of prestigious races, but it’s often more rewarding to place your horse in a race where they have a genuine chance of winning. My journey with Amber Ale, a horse who struggled in city races but excelled in country handicaps, taught me the value of strategic placement. By the time he came to our stable, Amber Ale had ‘trained off’ and hadn’t won a race for over 12 months. I noticed that he had not been being beaten far in his recent city races, so we freshened him, and he won his first start easily for us, in an Open Handicap in the country. He ended up winning five more races with us, and a lot more prizemoney than if we had kept hoping for city wins.
The Importance of Form Analysis
Carefully analysing a horse’s previous performance is crucial. I bought another tried horse, Belwina, from a stable in Victoria. Her previous form suggested she'd thrive in a in the easier territory of country Queensland. By placing her in a less competitive environment, we quickly recouped her purchase costs and secured a couple of wins, before on-selling her for a handy profit.
Key Takeaways
Know Your Horse: Every horse has a unique profile, and understanding this helps in making informed decisions.
Strategic Placement: Aim for races where your horse has the best chance to win, even if it means opting for less prestigious events.
Form Analysis: Invest time in understanding a horse’s past performances.
Final Thoughts
In racing, success often comes from strategic thinking and attention to detail. As the famous Australian saying goes, “You should keep yourself in the best company and keep your horse in the worst company.” By placing your horse in races that match their ability, you can maximise their chances of winning and enjoy the journey at the same time.
